HC Deb 04 April 1922 vol 152 c2055W
Mr. G. EDWARDS

asked the Minister of Health whether he received a letter, dated 7th March, from the Forehoe Rural District Council pointing out that, as the district rate for unskilled labourers is now only 30s. a week, the maximum rate allowed by the regulations to men employed on relief work is 22s. 6d., from which is deducted insurance and unemployment stamps, reducing the wage to 21s. 4d., and asking that, as the workmen cannot maintain themselves and their families on this amount, the Department should reconsider the regulations in question or receive a deputation from the local authority; whether he is aware that no reply has been sent to this letter; and whether, in view of the circumstances stated, he will receive the deputation or revise the regulations governing the rates of wages to be paid on relief work?

Sir A. MOND

The letter in question was sent to the Unemployment Grants Committee by whom the matter has been considered. I hope to communicate the decision in the case to the hon. Member at an early date.
