YOUNGasked the Postmaster-General whether inquiries which had been made all over the country by the Union of Post Office Workers have produced the information that 83 per cent. of the sub-office assistants who live out are in receipt of an average wage of £1 8s. 5d., including war bonus, and that the remaining 17 per cent. who live in are being paid an averages wage of 16s. 6d., including bonus; whether 8 per cent. of the total number of assistants employed work over 60 hours per week whilst 47 per cent. work more than 48 hours per week; and whether, having regard to the serious state of affairs revealed by these figures, he will cause an immediate investigation to be made in the whole working of the sub-office system?
