HC Deb 03 March 1921 vol 138 cc2041-2W
Mr. G. BARKER

asked the Secretary for Mines how many coal mines have been closed during the month of February, 1921, owned by or connected with the Ebbw Vale Steel, Iron and Coal Company; how many workpeople have been thrown out of employment in consequence of the closing of these mines; what are the prospects of a speedy resumption of work at these collieries; and if he can furnish any special reason for this company closing these mines after making over £2,000,000 profits during the last 18 months?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

Eleven mines owned by or connected with the Ebbw Vale Steel, Iron and Coal Company, employing approximately 19,000 workpeople, were closed down during the month of February. I am advised that the company find it impracticable, to continue to work these pits during the present period of trade depression. I have no information which would enable me to confirm the hon. Member's estimate of the past profits of the company.
