HC Deb 01 March 1921 vol 138 c1642W
Sir R. BLADES

asked the Postmaster-General what is the Telephone Directory costing at present, now that it is being produced at the Government printing works; and why tenders for its production were not invited from printing firms capable of undertaking this work?

Mr. BALDWIN

The total cost (for printing and paper) of the first issue of the complete directories—London and provincial—produced at the Government Printing Works at Harrow was £71,702. For subsequent issues the cost will be approximately £48,900. After full consideration, it was decided that it would be more economical to print the Telephone Directories at the Government Printing Works than to give the work to a private contractor.
