asked the Postmaster-General what is the mileage of telephone and telegraph wires maintained by railway companies for the use of the Post Office and the annual sum paid by his Department to the railway companies in respect of the maintenance of such wires?

The mileage of telephone and telegraph wires maintained by railway companies for the use of the Post Office is about 61,500, and £63,000 a year is paid to the companies in respect of maintenance.
