HC Deb 21 June 1921 vol 143 c1125W
Mr. LAMBERT

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will state separately the total cost to the British Exchequer caused by the British occupation of Mesopotamia and Palestine for the years 1919 and 1920, respectively?

Mr. YOUNG

In the financial year 1919–20 during which demobilisation was proceeding, the total expenditure on Mesopotamia and Palestine together is estimated at between £70,000,000 and £80,000,000. It is not possible to give any exact figures as part of the expenditure was not divided between the several theatres. The estimated expenditure for the year 1920–21 is about £40,500,000.
