§ Mr. CHARLES EDWARDSasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that the average amount of tax paid by the licensees of premises for the sale of intoxicating liquors in 1910 was £38 9s. 10d. and in 1920 £22 or a reduction of £17 8s. 10d.; that the average tax on clubs for the same year, 1910, was £8 and in 1920, £38, or an increase of £30; and whether he will take steps to rectify this matter with a view to giving something like equal treatment?
Mr. YOUNGMy right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer is unable to agree with the figures given in the question as representing the average taxation of licensed premises and clubs for the year 1910. As regards the relevancy of a comparison between the taxation of clubs and that of licensees of premises, I would refer to an answer given on the 14th instant to the hon. Member for Barkston Ash Division (Mr. Lane-Fox), of which I am sending my hon. Friend a copy.
