§ Lieut.-Commander KENWORTHYasked the President of the Board of Education whether he is considering the claim of the uncertificated and supplementary school teachers to a more adequate share in the Government grant in view of their alleged grievance and the rate of salaries they at present receive?
§ Mr. FISHERI do not understand the suggestion which the hon. and gallant Member wishes to make. The Government grant in aid of elementary education is not apportioned for the payment of certificated, uncertificated, or supplementary teachers, but is calculated on a formula which takes into account the total expenditure of local education authorities on teachers' salaries. The relation between the rates of salary for certificated teachers and for uncertificated teachers, respectively, was carefully considered by the Standing Joint Committee on Teachers' Salaries before making the recommendations contained in their Report on Standard Scales which is now under review. The payment of supplementary teachers is not dealt with in that Report.
