HC Deb 21 April 1921 vol 140 cc2097-8W
Mr. WIGNALL

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he is aware of the keen demand for allotments at Newlyn, Cornwall; that applications were made to Paul Urban District Council in November, 1919, and, after considerable delay, four fields were inspected by the; county authorities in June, 1920; that one field was selected by the county authorities but the owner objected, and the Paul Council refused to put the compulsory powers of the Allotments Acts into force; that the council proposed to select another field, which, it had been agreed, was inaccessible and in other ways unsuitable; that no further action has been taken by the council, and the county authorities now decline to take further steps, advancing as the reason that the field required by the applicants is unsuitable, in spite of the fact that this field was the one originally selected by the county authorities; and whether he will have an immediate inquiry made into the case with a view to suitable land being provided for these applicants?

Mr. PARKER

The Ministry is aware of a demand for allotments in Newlyn. In January last the Paul Urban District Council referred the question of the provision of allotments to the Cornwall County Council, and it is understood that some difference of opinion arose between the county council, the parish council, and the local allotment association as to which particular piece of land should be acquired. The Ministry has no official information as to what decision was ultimately arrived at by the county council, but inquiries will be made and the hon. Member informed of the result.
