HC Deb 07 April 1921 vol 140 c460W
Mr. NEWBOULD

asked the Chief Secretary why St. John's Church, Tralee, was fired on by a machine gun on the evening of the 26th March, when many people were assembled in it for confession; and how many people were killed or injured on that occasion?

Mr. HENRY

This matter was recently brought to the notice of my right hon. Friend the Chief Secretary, who directed that a full report should be furnished. According to that report a number of rifle shots were fired by civilians on the evening in question in the direction of the auxiliary barracks in Tralee. The sentry fired several rounds in reply, but it is not known whether the three or four shots which struck the roof and walls of the chapel were fired by him or by the civilians. There was certainly no wilful or deliberate firing at the chapel by the sentry. I am glad to state that although a number of people were in the chapel at the time no person was killed or injured.
