§ Sir E. GEDDESThe net surplus for the month of September on all the business of the railway companies which affects the Government was £228,485, after meeting the guarantee. In October there was a net liability of £4,936,906, due to the effects of the coal strike, the disturbances in Ireland and the rise in948W wages and salaries under the sliding scale and in other items of expenditure.
