HC Deb 25 November 1920 vol 135 cc654-5W
Mr. PENNEFATHER

asked the Home Secretary whether a meeting in Liverpool, which was to have been addressed by Sir John Simon, K.C., and others on the subject of reprisals in Ireland, was abandoned owing to the fears of the police that it might have caused collisions between sympathisers with Sinn Fein and the relatives and friends of soldiers and policemen recruited in Liverpool and foully murdered or wounded or exposed to death or disablement at the hands of enemies of this country?

Mr. SHORTT

I learn from the chief constable that he had definite grounds for believing that a serious breach of the peace would occur if the meeting were held, and that on his advice the organisers of the meeting very wisely agreed to postpone it.
