HC Deb 24 November 1920 vol 135 c450W
Colonel PENRY WILLIAMS

asked the Chief Secretary for Ireland whether public inquests were held in the cases of any of the following civilians killed in Ireland by forces of the Crown in September and, if so, in which cases: Patrick Hegarty, Michael Lynch, Patrick Hartrett, Jeremiah Healy, John Mulroy, James Quirke, James Lawless, John Gibbons, Thomas Connole, Patrick Lennane, P. J. Lehane, James Salmon, John Lynch, Joseph Athy, Edward Trodder, John Gaynor, John McFadden, and John Connolly, and the following in October: Michael Guffin, Patrick Carroll, Joseph Comingham, James Lehane, Peter 0'Carroll, Henry Kelly, Michael O'Rorke, Francis Dwyer, Edward Dwyer, Patrick Doyle, Michael Walsh, Charles Lynch, Michael Ryan, William Gleeson, Daniel Lehane, Professor Carolan, Michael Scanlan, and John Sherlock?

Sir H. GREENWOOD

Courts of inquiry in lieu of inquests were held in all the cases mentioned by the hon. and gallant Member except those of Thomas Connole, Patrick Lennane, J. J. Lennane, James Salmon, James Lehane and Daniel Lehane. I am making inquiry as to whether any such Court has been held in the last two cases, and, if not, why not. I have no information regarding the other four, but if the hon. and gallant Member will inform me where these deaths are alleged to have taken place I will make further inquiry into the matter. The disclosure of the names of officers or witnesses who take part in these inquiries may mean their assassination.
