HC Deb 24 November 1920 vol 135 cc455-6W
Captain BOWYER

asked the Secretary of State for War whether his attention has been drawn to the case of Mrs. Williams, mother of Private T. C. Williams, No. 80632, 2nd troop, B squadron, 19th Royal Hussars, now serving in India; whether he is aware that Private Williams, when he was in the Bucks Hussars, allowed his mother 3s. 6d. a week, and on his joining the 19th Hussars increased this by another 1s. 6d. per day, making a total of 14s. per week; and why it is that Mrs. Williams is now being paid only 10s. 6d. instead of 14s.?

Sir A. WILLIAMSON

Private Williams originally made an allotment of 6d. a day, and this was paid to Mrs. Williams with Dependants' Separation Allowance. From the 29th September, 1917, the whole amount (allotment and allowance) was paid from Army funds, no recovery being made from the soldier's pay. He subsequently made an allotment of 1s. 6d. per diem, and this was paid with Dependants' Separation Allowance until the 4th October, when the allowance ceased to be issuable under the new Regulations. The voluntary allotment of 10s. 6d. continued to be paid to Mrs. Williams, and this amount only is being charged to the soldier's account.
