§ Mr. MILLSasked the Home Secretary (1) if he is aware that Sir Basil Thompson, Chief of the Secret Service Police, having confiscated certain films, the possessions of a British subject, Mr. M'Laine, on 26th August, has since, after offering to return these films under certain conditions, refused to accept guarantees and still refuses possession, and whether he will make inquiries into this alleged grievance;
(2) why films, photographs, and literature found in the possession of Mr. W. M'Laine on his return as an official dele gate were confiscated on 26th August, although members of the Labour delegation to Russia brought back the same film and photographs, as did Mr. Wells, a distinguished journalist, and were in no way interfered with?
§ Mr. SHORTTOne film, some photographs, and literature in Mr. M'Laine's possession were taken and examined. The photographs were returned to him 261W and some of the literature was returned and some retained as highly objectionable. On Mr. M'Laine giving a written undertaking to alter the titles of the film which were objectionable, the film was in ordinary course sent to the Customs Authority and will be handed to Mr. M'Laine on payment of the duty. I am not aware that Mr. Wells brought in any film.
