HC Deb 06 May 1920 vol 128 cc2260-1W
Mr. W. R. SMITH

asked the President of the Board of Education whether his attention has been called to an advertisement in which the Northamptonshire county education committee advertised for supplementary teachers at a commencing salary of £55 per annum; whether, in these days of high prices, £1 1s. 2d. per week is a sufficient salary for a woman engaged in teaching; and whether he can state the number of supplementary teachers, and the total number of other teachers, employed in the elementary schools of this authority?

Mr. FISHER

I have not seen the advertisement referred to. In view of the conditions under which the employment of supplementary teachers is recognised, the Board have not felt justified in prescribing any minimum rate of salary for them. The numbers of supplementary teachers and of other teachers employed in the public elementary schools under the Northamptonshire local education authority on the 31st March, 1920, were:—

Supplementary Teachers 201
Certificated and Uncertificated Teachers 737
