HC Deb 06 May 1920 vol 128 cc2245-6W
Mr. HOGGE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why no action has been taken by the Treasury under the Retired Officers (Civil Employment) Act, 1919, to enable deductions made from the salaries of retired officers in civil employment to be refunded to them by Government Departments; and what action will be taken and when to ensure that the intention of Parliament as regards this matter will be given effect to by the Treasury?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I much regret the delay in issuing the Rules under the Act referred to, which has been due to the heavy pressure of work, the time necessary for consultation with other Departments, and to minor difficulties arising out of special cases. I will do my best to expedite a decision, and I can assure the hon. Member that effect will be given to the intentions of Parliament regarding this matter. I would remind him that interim instructions have been given to Departments, under which deductions from the salaries of these officers ceased at the end of November last.
