HC Deb 06 May 1920 vol 128 c2268W
Mr. A. HERBERT

asked the Secretary of State for India when the new rates of pensions for Indian Army officers are to be published?

Mr. MONTAGU

I hope to be able to announce the new scale of Indian Army officers' pensions very shortly.

Sir W. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the Secretary of State for India whether he is aware that there are still some officers alive who were transferred from the East India Company's Army to that of the Crown in 1858, and that, owing to the rise in the cost of living, these old officers find their pensions very insufficient; and, if so, whether he will take steps to increase their pensions?

Mr. MONTAGU

I am aware of the circumstances stated in the first part of the question. If the War Office grant any increase to the retired pay of British Service officers who on account of age or infirmity were unable to be employed during the War, I should be prepared to consider the extension of such a concession to retired officers of the Indian Army, but I am not prepared to grant to Indian Army officers a concession which has not been approved for the British Service.
