HC Deb 03 May 1920 vol 128 cc1728-9W
Mr. A. T. DAVIES

asked the Minister of Food whether he is in a position to state that large quantities of butter will be received in this country during the next three months; and whether arrangements to reduce the price to the consumer are being considered?

Sir W. MITCHELL-THOMSON

The Food Controller has no reason to suppose that the arrivals of imported butter during the next three months will represent a larger proportion of the years supplies than the normal arrivals for that period. The world production of butter is still considerably less than the demand. I am unable to hold out any hope of a reduction in the present retail price, which is much below that in force in most Continental countries, including Denmark, from which a large proportion of the supply of imported butter is derived.
