HC Deb 03 May 1920 vol 128 cc1719-20W
Mr. MORRIS

asked the Secretary of State for War and Air whether he is aware that the Imperial War Graves Commission are unable to give any information as to the place of burial of the late Rifleman Walter Alfred Bridge, late No. 44,175, 12th Royal Irish Rifles, notwithstanding the fact that the parents of this deceased soldier were able six months ago to obtain full information on this point, as well as a photograph of the grave; and whether or not similar failures on the part of the Imperial War Graves Commission are of frequent occurrence?

Mr. CHURCHILL

Rifleman Bridge died as a prisoner of war at Kreuznach in Germany. Information regarding graves in Germany is, as a rule, obtained from German sources, except in areas occupied by the Army of the Rhine, where graves are being registered in the usual way. In the present case, on information supplied by the father, the War Office arranged for the grave to be specially visited by officers of the Rhine Army and the particulars obtained were forwarded to the father on the 1st instant. As regards the last part of the question, the hon. Member will understand from my answer to his other question to-day that the duty of collecting information of this kind does not fall on the Imperial War Graves Commission.
