asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he is aware that banks are now considering proposals for opening accounts for workmen to which their wages are credited direct by their employers; and whether, in view of the importance of this method of encouraging thrift, he will consider a diminution of the cheque tax in such cases?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

I am not aware of the facts stated in the first part of the question; but in any case I should be unable to adopt the suggestion contained in the latter part of the question.
