HC Deb 29 March 1920 vol 127 cc910-1W
Captain BAGLEY

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer the respective values in dollars, on any recent day in New York, of a £1 Treasury note, an English sovereign, and gold bullion equal to the weight of gold in an English sovereign?

Mr. CHAMBERLAIN

On 27th March, 1920, the closing quotation for demand sterling in New York—which may be taken as broadly equivalent to the quotation for a £1 currency note—was $3.94½. The par value of a £1 gold piece or of an amount of gold bullion equivalent to that contained in a British sovereign is $4.866.
