HC Deb 29 April 1920 vol 128 c1432W
Mr. L. SCOTT

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, before proposing the continuance of the Excess Profits Duty and the raising of the rate to 60 per cent., he considered any alternative methods of raising the £220,000,000 for which he has budgeted; if so, what they were and what was the approximate maximum yield to be anticipated from them; and whether he has considered the suggestion of a tax of one per cent. on the turnover of all business concerns?

Mr. BALDWIN

My hon. and learned Friend may rest assured that before introducing the proposals outlined in his Budget Statement, my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer made a careful examination of alternative proposals, including that referred to in the concluding paragraph of his question.
