§ Mr BRIDGEMANNo statistics are available in the Coal Mines Department prior to the year 1919 of the number of tons of coal carbonised, but from information obtained from the Home Office reports and from Returns prepared by the Ministry of Munitions of the production of coke at coke ovens it is estimated that the coal consumption for this purpose was approximately 20,000,000 tons in each of the years 1917 and 1918.
