HC Deb 25 November 1919 vol 121 c1659W
Lieut.-Commander CHILCOTT

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he will give the average selling price of petrol per gallon in tins to the public in November, 1918, May, 1919, and at the present time; and whether the Government will take steps, by control or other means, to reduce the present price of this fuel, which to-day is inflating the cost of transport?

Mr. BRIDGEMAN

The average retail selling price of petrol per gallon in tins in November, 1918, was, in England and Wales, 4s.; the corresponding price in May, 1919, was 3s. 0½d., and the current average retail price is understood to be 2s. 11½d. per gallon. Petrol has already been declared to be an article in common use under the terms of the Profiteering Act, and the provisions of that Act accordingly apply to it.
