HC Deb 18 November 1919 vol 121 cc397-8W
MR. CHADWICK

asked the President of the Board of Trade if, having regard to the fact that this country is so seriously short of every means of transport, he will immediately remove all import restrictions or tariffs on the import of all motor vehicles for a period of six months from 1st January next?

Sir A. GEDDES

The only restriction at present in force upon the importation of motor cars is the Import Duty of 33.⅓ per cent,ad valorem, originally imposed during the War for revenue purposes and continued by successive Finance Acts. This duty does not apply to cars imported for commercial use. It could be removed or suspended only by legislation, and the suggestion contained in the question should be addressed to my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer.
