HC Deb 18 November 1919 vol 121 cc388-9W
MAJOR HILLS

asked the Secretary of State for War whether his attention has been directed to the case of Captain George Legard, Durham Light Infantry, who held no commission and was over forty years of age on the outbreak of war; whether he received a commission dated 11th August, 1914, served a year in England, went overseas in August, 1915, was sent home in February, 1916, suffering from neurasthenia., the result of shell-shock, continued serving till September, 1917, when he was demobilised to return to his civil employment; whether his civil employment is head master of a well-known school at Durham, which had to be carried on and could not be carried on except for him; whether he has been refused the usual gratuity on the ground that he was demobilised at his own request; and whether, in view of this officer's gallant record of service, though over forty years of age, he will reconsider his decision as to a gratuity?

Mr. FORSTER

I regret that I am unable to treat this case exceptionally.
