HC Deb 18 November 1919 vol 121 c389W
Mr. ATKEY

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Munitions whether he is aware that the Director of Steel Production compiled statistics showing the amount of coal carbonised both in patent by-product ovens and in bee-hive ovens in the years 1917 and 1918; and whether he would now publish these figures for each method of carbonisation?

Mr. HOPE

The only figures available are those for the production of metallurgical coke for the years 1916, 1917, and 1918; these will afford some indication of the amount of coal carbonised in coke ovens during those years. The figures are as follow:

Tons.
1916 13,422,195
1917 13,801,607
1918 13,277,007

The subdivision between by-product, beehive, and retort ovens can only be given for the year 1917, and is as follows:

1917. Tons.
By-product 10,866,673
Bee-hive 2,411,244
Retort 523,690
