HC Deb 17 November 1919 vol 121 cc640-1W
Mr. T. GRIFFITHS

asked the Secretary of State for War whether the action of the military authorities in South Wales, in approaching the Chief Constable of Monmouthshire in the spring of the year, with a view to obtaining the names and addresses of secretaries of trade union branches in the district, was taken on any instructions from the War Office; whether the military authorities in any other areas have taken similar action; and what possible occasion the authorities had in mind which would necessitate communication with trade union branch secretaries?

Mr. CHURCHILL

The answer to the first part of the question is in the negative, and, so far as I am aware, the answer to the second part is also in the negative. With regard to the third part of the question, I understand that the local military authorities thought that occasions might arise when it might be of advantage to trade union branch secretaries to be furnished with information on matters affecting their branches.
