§ Colonel GRETTONasked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Shipping Controller why the Government still retains steamers urgently required for traffic between Ireland and British ports; if he is aware that the capacity of the steamers now available is only 50 per cent, of the demand for carrying foodstuffs and livestock; and if any arrangements can be made to release further vessels for the Irish service?
Colonel WILSONThe cross-Channel steamers on requisition suitable for foodstuffs and live stock are not now being used for Government service, but are in various stages of reconditioning with a view to return to their owners. Although more tonnage could be used in Irish trade, if available, I am not aware that the demand is 50 per cent, in excess of the supply.
