HC Deb 04 November 1919 vol 120 c1326W
Major BARNES

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what is the approximate cost to the nation of His Majesty's ship "Eagle," now nearing completion; and has any consideration been given by the naval authorities to the labour conditions on Tyneside before deciding to stop work at the Armstrong naval yard?

Dr. MACNAMARA

The total expenditure, up to 30th September, 1919—which is the latest date for which figures are available—incurred on the construction of His

Majesty's ship "Eagle" was £2,199,358, of which £1,334,358 was paid to the Chilean Government in respect of work done for that Government before the ship was taken over by the Admiralty. Every consideration was given to labour conditions on the Tyne before deciding to remove the ship to a naval yard.
