HC Deb 28 May 1919 vol 116 c1255W
Mr. TILLETT

asked the President of the Board of Trade what steps he is taking to utilise the interior river and canal tonnage to relieve the congestion of the great ports and the railways in view of the laying-up of river and canal craft which could be utilised for effective transport to the hinterland centres of industry?

Sir A. GEDDES

The Canal Control Committee are doing what they can in present circumstances to provide facilities for the conveyance of traffic by canal. So far as I am aware, the number of canal boats in use is sufficient to deal with the traffic that at present offers, but if my hon. Friend has any special case in view and will give me the necessary information I shall at once have the matter investigated.
