HC Deb 04 March 1919 vol 113 c232W
Mr. HAILWOOD

asked the Food Controller if he is aware that the Ministry of Food is making a profit of about 6d. per lb. on beef and mutton in order to compensate them for a loss of about £1,000,000 per week on wheat; and if he has any statement to make on the subject?

Mr. ROBERTS

The suggestion in the question is without foundation. The Ministry of Food is making no such profit on the sale of beef and mutton. It is true that some profit is made on certain imported meat, but against this must be set a loss upon other imported meat, due to the fact that the controlled price in the United Kingdom is less than in the producing country, and upon the whole the account, it is hoped, will balance.
