HC Deb 04 June 1919 vol 116 c2045W
Captain FOXCROFT

asked the Home Secretary when he proposes to introduce the Bill dealing with the conditions of employment in shops; whether the measure will deal with hours as well as other conditions; and whether he will consider the propriety, at the same time, of effecting a curtailment of the evil of Sunday trading?

Mr. SHORTT

No Bill dealing specially with conditions of employment in shops has been promised, and I see no prospect of introducing any such Bill during the present Session. As I stated to the deputation which I received last week from the Early Closing Association, it is proposed, if Parliament agrees, to continue in force for at least a year the existing Order which regulates shop hours, and I hope that by that time permanent legislation will have been passed which will deal with the whole subject of the conditions of employment in shops.
