§ Commander BELLAIRSasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in the case of any loans or payments for services rendered to Allied countries by the United 2022W States, Great Britain is responsible for a guarantee of payment over and beyond the sum of $4,260,000,000 which we owe directly to the United States?
Mr. CHAMBERLAINThe figure of $4,260,000,000, to which the hon. and gallant Member refers, is the amount of debt due to the United States Government. It does not include loans borrowed in America otherwise than from the American Government. Under the Anglo-French Loan Act Great Britain is responsible jointly and severally with the French Government for a loan of $500,000,000, exclusive of this sum and of the direct debt to the United States Government. The further loans due in America amount to approximately $606,000,000.
