HC Deb 27 February 1919 vol 112 cc1971-2W
Mr. RAMSDEN

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what reduction has been made in the staff of his Department since the Armistice?

Dr. MACNAMARA

The total number of civilian staff (excluding messengers and charwomen) employed by the Admiralty on the 11th November last was 8,044; there are now 7,415, showing a net reduction of 629. The gross reduction was in point of fact 910, but there have been 281 new entries rendered necessary by the increased work in the Accountant-General's Department—payment of War gratuities, increases in children's separation allowances, and so on—and in connection with reconstruction and demobilisation problems.
