HC Deb 15 December 1919 vol 123 cc73-4W
Captain BROWN

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the wages of the following grades in the coal-mining industry are under £5 per week, namely, fore and back overmen, master shifters, surface engine wrights, heap keepers, weigh clerks, etc.; that these men have positions of great responsbility, and in many cases receive less wages than men and boys who are under their charge; and if he will direct the Coal Controller's attention to their position with a view to obtaining for them remuneration adequate to their responsible work and fair in comparison with the wages of those who work under them?

Sir A. GEDDES

My information does not tally with the suggestions given in the first part of the question. 'The remainder of the question would appear therefore not to arise.
