HC Deb 03 April 1919 vol 114 c1415W
Colonel W. THORNE

asked the Secretary of State for War if he is aware that a number of soldiers stationed at Sutton, Surrey, have been informed that they will be charged 9s. 3d. for a cardigan, 8s. 6d. shirts, 2s. socks, 1s. 6d. towel, and braces 1B. 6d.; and if he will take action in the matter?

Mr. FORSTER

I am not clear whether my hon. and gallant Friend means that the soldiers in question have been given to understand that these charges will be made for articles in cases where they are entitled to free renewal. If so, I should be glad if he would let me have further particulars. My hon. and gallant Friend is no doubt aware that at the present time all soldiers are entitled to free renewals of all articles of clothing worn out by fair wear, but when a soldier makes away with his clothing he commits an offence punishable under the Army Act, and in such circumstances he is not entitled to free replacement of deficiencies.
