HC Deb 21 March 1918 vol 104 cc1179-80W
Captain Earl WINTERTON

asked the Prime Minister if, in the event of a General Election, opportunity will be afforded to hon. Members in His Majesty's Army in distant parts to return to England in order to offer themselves for reelection; whether such leave will be granted, as special leave, without prejudice to hon. Members' military position, on the understanding that immediately after the election they either return to their military duties or apply for demobilisation; and whether his attention has been called to the fact that, unless some such special arrangement is made hon. Members in such a position will have no alternative but to apply for leave in the ordinary way, with the probability of having to wait for months before their leave is granted, or else to apply to be demobilised before they proceed to England?

Mr. MACPHERSON

It has been decided by the Government that any individual, officer or man, who is an accepted candidate by a recognised political organisation for Parliament, should be allowed to leave to address his Constituents if and when an election is pending.
