HC Deb 15 November 1917 vol 99 cc593-4W
Mr. TICKLER

asked the Under-Secretary of State for War whether, despite his assurance, soldiers are being employed on civil work in telephone exchanges on the East Coast; whether he is aware that. a soldier is performing a duty in the trunk exchange and another soldier a duty in the local exchange at Grimsby, and whether these two soldiers are being employed to cover civilian vacancies; whether he is aware that two soldiers are taking the place of a temporary night operator at Immingham, and that other soldiers are acting as substitutes for one established and two temporary night. operators at the Grimsby local exchange; and whether he will see that soldiers are not employed to reduce the present low wage standard of the Post Office telephonist?

Mr. FORSTER

I will make inquiries, and will let my hon. Friend know the result as soon as possible.
