HC Deb 04 July 1917 vol 95 cc1119-20W
Mr. ANDERSON

asked the Secretary for Scotland whether certain local authorities in Scotland are sterilising and placing for sale for the purpose of human consumption the meat of cattle affected with tuberculosis with a view to disposing of such meat to the poor; if so, if he can give the names of the local authorities which have taken this step; and if any recommendation has been issued by his Department on the matter?

Mr. MUNRO

With regard to the first two parts of the question, I understand that the local authorities at Glasgow, Dundee, Hamilton, and Aberdeen have made or are considering arrangements for sterilising parts of specially selected carcases of tuberculous animals for sale to the general public. The methods adopted have the approval of the Local Government Board for Scotland, who are satisfied that the selection of carcases and the methods of sterilisation are such that the meat is rendered harmless and may be consumed without injury to health; and that it forms a useful addition to the food supply of the country.
