HC Deb 02 April 1917 vol 92 cc942-3W
Sir W. BYLES

asked what is the present practice of the War Office in regard to the calling up of theological and medical students?

Mr. MACPHERSON

The arrangements at present in force with regard to all students, including medical and theological, are that students are not in ordinary circumstances called to the Colours if, being under the age of thirty-one, they are classified lower that B l, or if they are thirty-one or over and classified lower than A. Any student falling under this arrangement is, unless in possession of a tribunal exemption, required to join an Officers' Training Corps. In view, however, of the requirements of the Royal Army Medical Corps, medical students who are within twenty-four months of taking their medical degree or licence, are not called up if they join an Officers' Training Corps, and similarly, on the recommendation of the Army Chaplain's Department, calling up will be postponed in the case of specified theological students whose ordination or call is required by their denomination for the purpose of enabling them to supply the requisite number of Army chaplains.
