HC Deb 21 November 1916 vol 87 cc1225-6W
Mr. P. WHITE

asked the Secretary to the Treasury at what dates the raids took place on Hartlepool and Scarborough, and the dates, respectively, upon which the Government paid compensation money to the owners whose property suffered; will he state the terms of reference to the parties who awarded the grant; whether in every case their awards were honoured without question by the Treasury; and, if not, in how many instances did the Treasury interfere, and with what result?

Mr. McKINNON WOOD

The terms of reference of the Committee which dealt with claims arising out of the bombardment of Scarborough and the Hartlepools on 16th December, 1914, were as followsTo investigate the damage to persona and property sustained in the recent bombardment of the Hartlepools, Scarborough and Whitby by German warships, with a view to affording relief from Imperial Funds to the persons affected. Payments were made during the summer and autumn of 1915, and deductions were made in numerous cases by the Treasury in respect of sums received from other sources.
