HC Deb 09 November 1916 vol 87 cc424-5W
Mr. JACOBSEN

asked the Secretary of State for War if clerical work in banking establishments entitles men of military age from eighteen and upwards to be exempt from military service and to be badged on War service; and if he can state the number of men of military age employed at Cox's Bank, Charing Cross, and branches so badged?

Mr. FORSTER

No, Sir; the clerical staff in banks are not entitled to badges and, as in other businesses, the men of military age are being called to the Colours unless in possession of certificates of exemption. In the particular case of Messrs. Cox and Company, who as Army Agents, conduct a large amount of business in direct connection with Army pay and allowances, an arrangement was made with the Army Council for the gradual release of such proportion of their staff as are not essential to the efficient conduct of the enormously increased business as Army agents. The release of men fit for general service by Messrs. Cox continues and will continue as fast as the needs of the Army allows.
