HC Deb 09 March 1916 vol 80 c1727W
Mr. HODGE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will, in furtherance of the Government's economy and thrift campaign, communicate with all persons in receipt of annuities, gratuities, allowances, or perpetual pensions, to abate the same by 25 per cent.; and will the Government cease payment of salaries to all holders of such sinecure appointments as that of Ecclesiastical Commissioners, Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod, or appointments of a similar character?

Mr. McKENNA

I do not think it would be practicable to take general action on the lines suggested by my hon. Friend.
