HC Deb 21 August 1916 vol 85 c2290W
Mr. CREAN

asked the Home Secretary whether Patrick Carmody, Jeremiah Rear-don, Jeremiah Twomey, and Cornelius Murphy, of Millstreet, county Cork, are still detained at Frongoch Detention Camp; whether their cases have been investigated by the Advisory Committee, and, if so, with what result; if complaint has been made of the overcrowding and condition of the apartments in which they are confined and sleep; and if he will see that these men at least receive humane treatment pending trial?

Mr. BRACE

The Advisory Committee, after carefully considering the cases of these four persons, have recommended that they should be retained in internment. As regards the remainder of the question, I may refer the hon. Member to the replies which my right hon. Friend gave to the hon. Members for North Westmeath and the Harbour Division of Dublin on the 6th and 11th of July. I may add that he has just received fresh reports upon the accommodation and ventilation in the dormitories at Frongoch, which show that there is no ground for complaint whatever.

Sir T. ESMONDE

asked the Home Secretary how much longer it is proposed to detain Messrs. W. Seares and C. J. Irwin, both of Enniscorthy, county Wexford, now prisoners at Frongoch Internment Camp?

Mr. BRACE

The Advisory Committee carefully considered both these cases, and recommended that the prisoners should remain interned. They must, I fear, be detained, as in other cases, as long as this is necessary in the interests of public safety and of the defence of the realm.
