HC Deb 21 August 1916 vol 85 c2307W
Mr. L. HARMSWORTH

asked the Secretary of State for War (1) what number, roughly, of the 97,000 men requested by General Haig to express their wishes as to a career upon the land after the War were from the crofteer counties of Scotland; if so, what proportion of such men expressed themselves in favour of the suggestion; and (2) what number, roughly, of the 97,000 men consulted by General Haig as to their desire or not to live upon the land were from the crofter counties of Scotland; and, if so, what percentage of these expressed themselves in favour of this proposal?

Mr. ACLAND

My right hon. Friend has asked me to answer these questions, as such figures as are available are in the Board's possession. They do not, I regret to say, give any details which would throw light on the points which my hon. Friend raises.
