HC Deb 04 February 1915 vol 69 cc160-1W
Mr. JOYNSON-HICKS

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether the importation of sugar other than that sent to the Sugar Commission is now prohibited; if so, whether he is aware that sugar is being imported from Holland; and whether he can take steps to discover whether the Dutch sugar really conies from Germany?

Mr. RUNCIMAN

I may remind the hon. Member that the Proclamation of 26th October last, under which the importation of sugar into the United Kingdom is prohibited, exempted from that prohibition sugar "imported under contract made prior to 4th August, 1914." In all cases in which sugar is imported under this provision, proof is required that the sugar has not been produced by an enemy or in an enemy country or refined from sugar produced by an enemy or in an enemy country. I am further informed that the Government of the Netherlands have taken the most stringent precautions to prevent the introduction into that country from Germany cither of sugar or of sugar beet.
