HC Deb 26 February 1914 vol 58 c1973W
Mr. TYSON WILSON

asked the President of the Board of Trade if he is aware that the manager of the Margate Labour Exchange is advertising for carpenters by displaying bills at the Exchange and in shop-windows in various parts of the town offering a wage of 8½d. per hour, which is ½d. per hour below the rate of the district; and whether this attempt to secure cheap labour has his sanction?

Mr. BURNS

I have made inquiries into this matter, and am informed that the advertisements to which my hon. Friend presumably refers relate to vacancies notified not in the Margate district, but in other districts in which the rate for carpenters is lower than at Margate. I should add that, as my hon. Friend is aware, the officers of the Labour Exchanges take no responsibility with regard to the rate of wages offered by employers beyond supplying the applicant with all information in their possession on the subject.
