HC Deb 12 February 1914 vol 58 cc337-8W
Dr. CHAPPLE

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether, in order to establish a greater uniformity in the value of money, and especially during the period from February to the beginning of April, when his balances in the Bank of England reach their high-water mark, he will seek a power similar to that enjoyed by the Secretary to the Treasury of the United States of America and re-lend to the banks a portion of the money collected in taxes?

Mr. LLOYD GEORGE

Having regard to the difference between the arrangements as to the custody of Government balances in this country and the United States of America, I do not think there would be any advantage in seeking such powers as are suggested in the question, nor do I think that if such powers were obtained the use of them would have the effect which my hon. Friend anticipates.
